Remains of Early Islamic Era Mosque Found in Saudi Arabia

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Saudi Arabia’s Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH) announced the discovery of an ancient mosque in the country.

 

According to Okaz Daily, it has been unearthed in the southern province of Asir province.

The mosque, dating back to the early days of the advent of Islam, is 616 square meters in area.

It has a Mihrab (a semicircular niche in the wall of a mosque that indicates the Qibla- direction of Makkah) a prayer hall and two rooms.

It was discovered by an archeological team tasked by SCTH with conducting excavations in the area.

A large number of other historical items, including clay walls and tablets have been found in the area near the mosque.
